A New Series on Sleep and Your Health

Does lack of sleep cause depression? Or does depression cause insomnia? The answer seems to depend on whether you are talking with the chicken or the egg.  One thing is consistent, however.  Poor sleep and poor health are bedmates.

Every two weeks through the summer we will be featuring a sleep program offering two new objectives for improved sleep. If you wish to participate in this program make sure you follow our email newsletters over the next two or three months.  Every two weeks when we offer you two new objectives, add those to the previous week's and before you know it, you'll be well on your way to a happier, healthier, well-rested you.

Here are your initial objectives: First, go to bed and get out of bed at the same time everyday; second, make special note on your calendar of the time you tucked in and the time you got up.  This will help you be more aware of your true schedule. You must stick to this schedule no matter what. Even if you did not get to sleep until 3 am you must get up at your scheduled wake time and go to bed again at your scheduled sleep time.  Make your best attempt at this and watch for the next issue of Common Ground Online for another series of suggestions.

Why do I need better sleep?

The existence of insomnia and/or poor quality sleep is associated with certain central nervous system disorders such as depression, anxiety, and attention deficit disorder. Poor sleep habits can also play a role in other health concerns like heart disease, high blood pressure and stroke. In addition, the decreased mental alertness, cognitive function and memory of a sleep-deprived person can negatively impact the enjoyment of normal daytime activities. And what’s worse, the stress induced by lack of sleep results in, among other things, difficulty in sleeping!

Many medical experts recommend foods containing tryptophan for the evening meal to aid in the beginning of the sleep cycle.  Tryptophan is a precursor to the production of serotonin, which is a mood elevator.  A deficiency of serotonin is felt to be responsible for such CNS disorders as depression.  These critical components of the brain’s neurochemical system determine whether or not our system works the way it should.

The getting-to-sleep stage also depends on our bodies’ production of melatonin, another neurochemical that depends on adequate levels of serotonin which, as mentioned above, requires tryptophan.  The progression from happy to sad, to depressed to sleepless can occur at different rates depending on our individual body chemistry.

The use of a high-quality, broad spectrum nutritional supplement like Truehope EMPowerplus, can help to restore proper neurochemical balance.  Third party research has clearly demonstrated the relationship between nutritional deficiencies and CNS disorders, but re-establishing the proper nutritional balance is only the first step.  Breaking bad habits that formed during those painful, wakeful nights will help to get sleep back on the moonlight path.
