Welcome to another edition of Common Ground Online. Here's what's in this week's edition:
- Truehope Conference Call this Thursday August 3
- Nutrient Deficiencies & CNS disorders - Is there a proven correlation?
- LATE BREAKING NEWS! Truehope wins court case
On last month’s call, Tony and David discussed the issue of protracted withdrawal. They focused mainly on what protracted withdrawal is and how to recognize if you are experiencing it. In this month’s call, they'll discuss in more detail ways to address protracted withdrawal including supplementing with whey protein if necessary.
Tony and David will also discuss the issue of vitamin sensitivities. What is the concern? What can you do if you are sensitive to certain vitamins? Don’t miss this opportunity to hear these dedicated men share their experiences. Space is limited on the call so register early to reserve your spot.

We encourage you to RSVP now if you would like to listen in. Don't miss this opportunity to participate on the call! Please RSVP using the link above as email reservations through feedback@truehope.com will no longer be accepted.
The following information is taken from a comprehensive document compiled by Truehope titled, "Nutrient Profile of EMPowerplus". This document is available for download at myTruehope.net.
The late Linus Pauling of the Linus Pauling Heart Institute, winner of two Nobel prizes (one in medicine) indicated “you can trace every sickness, every disease, and every ailment to a mineral deficiency”. Over 40% of the U.S. population is taking a vitamin – mineral supplement in the hopes of finding some health benefit.
Much research has been completed demonstrating the importance of minerals in body function and that individuals suffering with the Central Nervous System (CNS) disorders of ADHD, Schizophrenia, Bipolar Disorder, Clinical Depression, Autism, Anorexia Nervosa & Dementia demonstrate significantly lower levels of micro and macro elements in hair, plasma, cell, urine and tissue analysis. (Subas A.F., Block G., “Use of Vitamin And Mineral Supplements: Demographics and Amounts of Nutrients Consumed: The 1987 Health Interview Survey,” Am J of Epidemiology, 1990;132:1091-1101.)
Here is just a sampling of the referenced studies for affective disorders (including bipolar) and depression:
Affective Disorders
The concentrations of a number of elements were determined in the plasma and erythrocytes of 21 Nigerians (11 females, 10 males) with symptomatic affective disorders. (11 depressives, 10 manics) and in 40 normal controls using proton – induced X-ray emission (PIXE) analysis. The plasma and erythrocyte Cu, and erythrocyte P, Ca, Fe, and Zn were significantly lower in the patients compared to the controls.
Durosinmi MA, et al., Biol Trace Elem Res 1994 Fall;43-45:357-61 Clinical Depression
This study investigates serum levels of zinc in 48 uni-polar depressed subjects (16 minor, 14 simple major and 18 melancholic subjects) and 32 normal volunteers. Serum zinc levels were significantly lower in major depressed subjects than in normal controls.

It is important to note that many of the studies that looked at deficiencies as a cause for mental illness focused on the decreased levels of only a few trace elements. At Truehope, our research has discovered that many nutritional elements are required to sustain a healthy mind and body and that they work synergistically to provide optimum benefit. For example, our bodies require magnesium in the correct balance to properly absorb calcium. EMPowerplus provides a large spectrum of macro and micro nutrients in the proper form and balance. It is this unique formulation of proper form and balance that is being scientifically proven to significantly improve mental wellness.
Truehope has won a four-year battle with Health Canada concerning the stop sale order of 2002 and the Canadian EMPowerplus embargo of 2003. Provincial Court Judge Gerald Meager in his decision on Friday determined that access to EMPowerplus is critical to life and that for EMPowerplus users, returning to standard drug treatment and psychiatric care "was not a reasonable legal option." He indicated that expert testimony from, Dr. Charles Popper and Dr. Bonnie J. Kaplan offered evidence that when the supplement is removed from a patient, symptoms return quickly--thus, Health Canada had no right to demand the stop sale of the vitamin and mineral product in Canada pending the obtaining of an "impossible Drug Identification Number". Truehope co-founders Tony Stephan and David Hardy say this victory is a victory for all natural health products in Canada. Vitamins and minerals are not drugs and Canadians should be given free access to choose the treatment of their choice.
